Gary Steinborn is a ceramic artist based in Venice, California. He began his journey into pottery at the age of thirteen when he received his first potter’s wheel as a gift from his mother. This early introduction to clay led him to set up a studio on the front porch of his family’s bungalow, where he honed his skills by throwing and sculpting clay by hand. His teenage years were marked by a vibrant atmosphere filled with local bohemian culture, rock music, and artistic expression.
Steinborn initially pursued a degree in chemistry at UCLA but soon shifted his focus to art. He graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts and later earned a Master’s Degree in Design. His education played a significant role in shaping his artistic vision and technical skills.
Artistic Influences
Growing up in Los Angeles exposed Steinborn to a diverse array of cultural influences, including surf culture, technology, and various art movements. He draws inspiration from notable figures such as Jeff Koons, Andy Warhol, Frank Gehry, Marcel Duchamp, and Jimi Hendrix. His work reflects elements from the American Arts and Crafts movement as well as contemporary design trends.
Artistic Style and Philosophy
Steinborn’s ceramics are characterized by their originality and craftsmanship. He aims to create pieces that are intelligent, humorous, and suitable for various styles of homes—from modernist to craftsman designs. His Bella Vase line is particularly noted for its connection to the American Arts and Crafts movement, showcasing matte glazes and geometric forms reminiscent of early 20th-century Teco pottery.
He emphasizes the importance of handmade artistry; every piece is crafted personally by him or his studio associate Deanna Watkins. The artworks are available in 24 matte glaze colors along with specific finishes like celadon and white crackle.
Current Work
Steinborn continues to innovate within the realm of ceramics while exploring themes ranging from virtual reality journalism to world economics. His goal remains consistent: to produce ceramics that resonate with viewers on multiple levels—visually appealing yet thought-provoking.
