(American, 1952-2016)
Laurie Burns considers herself very fortunate to be a glass artist. Her first path through life sent her on a journey through health care. First as a physical therapist, and then as an administrator whose creativity was applied to planning many different healthcare facilities. While still in her early twenties, Burns an active young woman, found that nothing in the medical world assuaged a growing restlessness of creativity. For many years she designed stain glass windows but her interests are now in the more challenging forms of glass art. A curiosity about the history and the many forms (liquid, solid, gas) of glass fueled her mind and led to her current mastery of fused glass. Glass art is her chosen career allowing her to express her thoughts and emotions through alternate realities. Along with her busy healthcare career, she opened her first glass business in 1978. Her studio is located near her home in Salt Lake City. Through the years this Utah resident has accumulated countless types of glass used in fascinating large and small artistic pieces. She draws on her studies of graphic and interior design to provide inspiration for her glass art. The sensory images are wonderful and the incisive quality has not gone unnoticed by galleries throughout the country.
My love affair with glass is a fascinating, and exciting relationship that affords me endless opportunity for my creative energy. The different forms that glass passes through when going from a solid to a liquid allows for a new creation in each step of the process. Layers of glass combined with metal and stone highlights the glass and creates even more possibilities to explore.
