Charley Snow _ Ben Steele

Charley Snow earned his BFA from the University of Utah in 1998. After graduation, he spent time working as an assistant to still life painter David Dornan, in addition to painting full time. Charley's work is included in a growing number of private collections from Massachusetts to California. He currently lives in Helper, Utah.

“What I like most about painting is the act of interpreting nature. When I layer splashes, drips, and strokes of paint to create an image, painting takes on a double life. Both the image and the marks are interesting.  That is essentially what painting is about for me—both the abstract and real existing in the same painting."

Ben Steele was born in 1977 in Kennewick, WA. He graduated from University of Utah in 2002 with a BFA in painting and drawing, continuing his education at the Helper Workshops under the instruction of David Dornan and Paul Davis. The summer workshops led to a multi-year internship with Dornan. Steele relocated to Helper, where he has been living and working as an artist ever since.

"My paintings are about how we see icons and everyday objects. The playful side of my work deals with the difference between a child's naivety and the desensitized view of an adult. Popular imagery floods our visual world and we lose our ability to separate the work from its cultural meaning. My intent is to explore this phenomenon and re-expose viewers to the images so they can open up and enjoy the work in a new way."
