Artist Reception
Friday, Jan 3, 4 - 7pm
CODA Gallery is pleased to present "Studio Visit," an exhibition of the paintings of celebrated artist, David Dornan. Come meet David at an artist reception on Friday, January 3, 4 - 7 pm, during El Paseo's First Friday Art Walk.
David Dornan, who holds an MFA from Arizona State University and resides in Helper, Utah, has his artwork featured in numerous public and private collections across the U.S. After resigning from a 17-year university faculty position, he pursued painting full-time, focusing on still life motifs. Over nearly 20 years, he has received numerous awards, including Utah's prestigious Governor's Award. In his paintings, everyday objects like cans, flowers, or brushes take on a monumental presence through bold scale changes and central placement. Dornan’s assertive paint application—using brushes, thumbs, rags, and drips—creates a sense of immediacy and spontaneity.
"My imagery emerges from the painting process itself, not from directly observing objects like containers and brushes. I build forms through paint, with colors, textures, and shapes evolving abstractly. By applying light theory to these abstract marks, I create a visual parallel to the objective world. While my work may suggest meaning, I aim for visual stimulation that transcends ideas, inviting viewers to truly “feel” through sight." – David Dornan
During the reception, enjoy a wine bar featuring organic wines and other beverages, with proceeds benefiting Angel View, a Coachella Valley nonprofit dedicated to serving children and adults with disabilities. A portion of the evening’s art sales will be donated to support Angel View, founded in 1954 at a natural hot mineral water spring in Desert Hot Springs.
