MIGUEL EDWARDS • NEW SCULPTURE
NOVEMBER 4 - 18, 2022
Artist reception: Friday, Nov 4, 4 - 7 pm
Miguel Edwards began his career in art as a photographer in Seattle. Originally from New Mexico, he captured the ‘90s grunge music scene for KEXP radio and Billboard Magazine, explored the Seattle art scene for City Arts magazine, and delved into many, varied projects in photography and film. His work is also commissioned by Microsoft, Boeing and other Fortune 500 companies.
The spark for Miguel’s work as a sculptor in steel and glass came in 2004, when he was commissioned to create a steel sphere for Burning Man. By 2009, that spark had grown to a fire that would shift the course of his career. Now Miguel works in both photography and sculpture, and the two art forms interplay in his work. In addition to his many private collectors, Miguel’s public installations include “Hope Rising,” a cauldron of fire for the 50th anniversary of the Special Olympics, “Relativity Clock,” an interactive sculpture in Redmond, and “El Sole: Elevate,” a sphere rising 20 feet in downtown Seattle.
I am constantly amazed by nature and inspired by people and humanity, which adds to my fascination for materials especially steel and glass. The forces of light and gravity as they interact with these materials are a constant source of fuel for my creative energy. I love how light falls on objects. It either reflects towards you, away from you, or refracts through glass. The penumbras and gradations, which are found and created as light falls across an arc or surface, never tires. As a primal force, gravity affects our lives in many ways from the tides to aging. With steel, I am able to take a stand against the tyranny of gravity, and change our perceptions of it. Everything about steel is exuberant to me. From its smell to the way it feels, behaves, and what it enables me to do. To channel these forces through these materials into art, requires moving a step beyond—the physical considerations of time, chaos and intuition—these are my collaborators. – Miguel Edwards
