JAMES CORBETT: New Sculpture
DECEMBER 6 - 27, 2019
DEC 6, FRI: OPENING RECEPTION, 5-8 PM
PALM DESERT, CA — CODA Gallery presents a new exhibition of sculpture by Australian artist James Corbett, running December 6 - 27, 2019. An opening reception, attended by the artist from Down Under, will be held 5-8 pm on December 6 in conjunction with El Paseo Art Walk/Palm Desert First Weekend.
James Corbett, an artist who once owned a motor wrecking business in Brisbane, has been turning auto parts into figurative sculptures for more than two decades. His work manifests as cowboys, dogs, dancers, insects, goats, birds, imaginative cars and motorcycles, and more.
One rainy Saturday afternoon in 1998, Corbett decided to bring to fruition some thoughts that had been in the back of his mind for some time and began welding together some parts. He liked the result, as did many others who saw it on the counter of his shop. The response was so good in fact that in 1999 he held his first exhibition at a motoring themed café in Brisbane called Vroom. Now, twenty years later, he has held successful exhibitions worldwide and has collectors in the United States, United Kingdom, New Zealand, United Arab Emirates, Switzerland, Japan, Argentina, and Malaysia.
Corbett was the three-time guest artist of the Brisbane International Auto Show and has also exhibited at the Essen Motor Show in Germany and produced many public and corporate commissions. “I’d like to think that well into the future my work will be regarded as both a pleasing sculpture and as an intriguing time capsule from the era of the motor vehicle,” says Corbett.
CODA Gallery opened on El Paseo in 1987 and offers a thoughtfully-curated collection of work by emerging, mid-career, and established artists. Located at 73400 El Paseo in Palm Desert, the gallery is open Monday through Saturday, 10-6; and Sunday, 11-5. For more information, call 760-346-4661 and/or visit www.codagallery.com.
