Jeanne Leighton-Lundberg Biography

(American, 1925 – 2014)

Jeanne Clark is an American painter born was born 1925 in Alpena, Michigan. Clarke began studying the arts in Chicago, Illinois at both the University of Chicago and the Chicago Art Institute.

At 19 years-old, Clark married and settled down in Connecticut. There, she raised three children, while simultaneously resuming her artistic training, by taking private lessons and studying at the Silvermine Guild at Yale University.

Having converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Clarke, at the age of 50, moved to Utah and attended Brigham Young University in order to better understand her religion. There, she earned both her Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Fine Arts degrees within the course of five years. After this, she remained at the university to teach drawing and painting.

Clark is recognized as a symbolist, for she fills each painting with symbols of various meanings, and a maximalist who covers every inch of her canvas with eye catching shapes and patterns. In her pieces, she uses specific motifs of colors and patterns, as well as objects such as tables adorned with flowers. However, alongside her symbols, Clarke mostly places an emphasis on the people in her paintings. "When you get right down to it," she says, "people are what it's all about . . . All moments are special. The present moment is all that we have and if we treat each moment, each day, as if it is special, then we are living life to the fullest."
